International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which was organized in 1980, was awarded the Novel Peace Prize in 1985 for its contribution to the disarmament by having appealed both the danger of nuclear war to the nations of various countries and the prevention of the war to the various states governments. Now it is one of the international NGOs in which 230,000 physicians from 83 countries worldwide are participating. The world conference and the local meetings at six various regions overseas are held almost every other year. Dr. Atsuo Ohtsuki (Kikuzaka Clinic) attended the 3rd IPPNW World Conference (in Amsterdam) in 1983. Since then many doctors have attended both the world conferences and the local meetings of Asian Pacific region. In 1988 Tokyo Physicians for Elimination of Nuclear Weapons , a society of physicians and those working in medical field protesting against the nuclear war and appealing for the elimination of nuclear weapons, was inaugurated and started its activities with Dr. Ohtsuki and other people. (1) The name of this society is gTokyo Physicians, Dentists and Those Working
in Medical Field for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and Prevention of
Nuclear War" (usually called asgTokyo Physicians for Elimination of
Nuclear Weapons".)
(2) The purpose of this society is to appeal the tragedy of nuclear war
from the medical and humanitarian points of view and to promote various
activities as physicians in order to abolish nuclear weapons.
(3) The activities of this society are not for any specific political party,
nor for any political, ideological and religious purposes.
(4) The society consists of doctors, dentists and those working in medical
field who agree to achieve the purposes of this society and are living and/or
working in Tokyo.
(5) In order to achieve the purposes of this society, the following projects
are planned to be carried out: Introducing medical and social influences
of injuries caused by the A-bomb. Other projects to achieve the purposes
of this society.
(6) The general meeting will be held once a year. This society has more
than one representative and some steering committee persons.
(7) This society is operated by membership fees and voluntary donations.
The membership fee costs 5,000 yen per year.
